XAR 450 Plate
XAR 450 Wear-Resistant Steel Plate Supplier in Tunisia
XAR 450 Wear-Resistant Steel Plate is a high-hardness abrasion-resistant steel developed for industrial equipment exposed to severe friction, sliding abrasion and mechanical wear. With a typical hardness range of 420–480 HBW, XAR 450 provides enhanced wear resistance for demanding operating conditions.
Compared with conventional structural steel and lower-hardness wear plates, XAR 450 is designed to withstand more intensive abrasive contact. It is widely considered for applications involving phosphate rock, minerals, sand, gravel, coal, cement raw materials and other abrasive materials.
Emirerri Steel supplies wear-resistant steel plates for mining companies, phosphate processing plants, cement manufacturers, construction contractors and heavy equipment manufacturers. Specifications, dimensions, certification and availability are confirmed according to project requirements.
What Is XAR 450 Steel?
XAR 450 belongs to the XAR (Extra Abrasion Resistant) family of special wear-resistant steels. It is manufactured to provide a combination of high hardness, mechanical strength and toughness for equipment operating under abrasive conditions.
The nominal hardness level of approximately 450 HBW makes this grade suitable for components requiring greater abrasion resistance than XAR 400.
XAR 450 is particularly useful where equipment is exposed to continuous material movement, friction and abrasive impact. Selecting the appropriate grade requires consideration of operating conditions, impact severity, plate thickness and fabrication requirements.

XAR Steel Grades Comparison
The XAR product family includes different hardness levels for different abrasion conditions.
| Grade | Typical Hardness Range | General Application |
|---|---|---|
| XAR 300 | 270–330 HBW | Moderate wear applications |
| XAR 400 | 370–430 HBW | General abrasion resistance |

| XAR 500 | 470–530 HBW | Severe abrasive conditions |
| XAR 600 | Above 550 HBW | Extreme abrasion applications |
These are indicative product-family hardness ranges. The guaranteed hardness and available thicknesses depend on the manufacturer’s product specification.
XAR 450 Equivalent Grades
XAR 450 is commonly evaluated alongside other internationally marketed abrasion-resistant steel grades.
| Manufacturer / Product Family | Comparable Grade |
|---|---|
| thyssenkrupp | XAR 450 |
| SSAB | Hardox 450 |
| Ruukki | Raex 450 |
These grades may have similar nominal hardness levels but are not automatically interchangeable. Chemical composition, impact properties, thickness limits, manufacturing conditions and certification requirements must be compared before substitution.
Corrosion Resistance
XAR 450 is primarily designed to resist mechanical abrasion rather than chemical corrosion.
It does not provide the same corrosion resistance as stainless steel or specialised corrosion-resistant alloys. In applications involving moisture, acids, chemicals, saline water or corrosive process fluids, additional corrosion protection or an alternative material may be required.
For phosphate processing and chemical plants, material selection should consider both mechanical wear and the chemical characteristics of the operating environment.
Heat Resistance and Temperature Considerations
Standard XAR 450 is intended for wear-resistant service under the operating conditions specified by its manufacturer.
Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures can affect hardness and mechanical properties. For applications involving continuous high-temperature operation, consult the manufacturer before selecting this grade.
Do not assume that standard XAR 450 has the same temperature performance as specialised heat-resistant steel grades.
Welding of XAR 450 Steel Plate
XAR 450 can be welded using suitable industrial welding processes. However, its high hardness and strength require controlled welding procedures to reduce the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking and undesirable changes in the heat-affected zone.
Important welding considerations include:
Select welding consumables compatible with the base material and required joint properties.
Use low-hydrogen welding consumables and appropriate storage procedures.
Determine preheating requirements based on plate thickness, carbon equivalent, restraint and ambient conditions.
Control heat input and interpass temperature.
Apply suitable welding sequences to minimise distortion and residual stress.
Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and an approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS).
Preheating temperatures should not be assumed from the grade designation alone. They must be established using the applicable manufacturer guidance and welding procedure.
Cutting, Machining and Fabrication
XAR 450 plates can be processed using suitable industrial equipment and controlled fabrication procedures.
Cutting: Plasma, laser and oxy-fuel cutting may be considered depending on plate thickness, equipment capability and manufacturer recommendations. The heat-affected zone should be taken into account when planning cutting operations.
Machining: High-performance cutting tools, rigid machine setups and appropriate cutting parameters are recommended due to the material’s hardness.
Cold forming: Bending and forming may be possible within specified limits. Minimum bending radius, tooling clearance, plate thickness and rolling direction should be checked against the manufacturer’s instructions.
Heat treatment: XAR 450 is generally supplied in a hardened delivery condition. Uncontrolled heating, stress relieving or re-quenching can change its hardness and mechanical properties. Thermal treatment should only be performed according to manufacturer recommendations.
