What Is XAR 500 Steel?
XAR 500 belongs to the XAR (Extra Abrasion Resistant) family of special structural steels. It is designed to provide high surface hardness and resistance to abrasive wear in equipment handling hard and abrasive materials.
The nominal hardness level of approximately 500 HBW makes XAR 500 suitable for applications requiring greater abrasion resistance than XAR 400 and XAR 450.
Its combination of hardness, strength and specified toughness makes it useful for manufacturing wear plates, liners, buckets, chutes, hoppers, dump truck bodies and other components exposed to continuous abrasive contact.

Comparison of XAR Wear-Resistant Steel Grades
The XAR product family includes different hardness levels for different operating conditions.
| Steel Grade | Typical Hardness Range | General Application |
|---|---|---|
| XAR 300 | 270–330 HBW | Moderate wear applications |
| XAR 400 | 370–430 HBW | General industrial abrasion |
| XAR 450 | 420–480 HBW | High abrasion resistance |
| XAR 500 | 470–530 HBW | Severe abrasive conditions |
| XAR 600 | Above 550 HBW | Extreme abrasion applications |
The hardness ranges are indicative manufacturer-published values. The appropriate grade should be selected according to abrasion severity, impact loading, operating temperature, plate thickness and fabrication requirements.
XAR 500 Equivalent and Comparable Grades
XAR 500 is commonly evaluated alongside other internationally marketed abrasion-resistant steel grades.
| Manufacturer / Product Family | Comparable Grade |
|---|---|
| thyssenkrupp | XAR 500 |
| SSAB | Hardox 500 |
| Ruukki | Raex 500 |
These grades may have similar nominal hardness levels, but they are not automatically interchangeable. Their chemical composition, impact properties, thickness limitations, delivery conditions and certification requirements must be compared before substitution.
Corrosion Resistance
XAR 500 is primarily designed to resist mechanical abrasion rather than chemical corrosion.
It does not offer the same corrosion resistance as stainless steel or specialised corrosion-resistant alloys. In applications involving moisture, acids, chemicals, saline water or corrosive process fluids, additional protective measures or an alternative material may be necessary.
For phosphate processing and chemical plants, material selection should consider both abrasive wear and the chemical characteristics of the process environment.
Heat Resistance and Temperature Considerations
Standard XAR 500 is intended for wear-resistant applications under the operating conditions specified by its manufacturer.
Prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures can affect its hardness and mechanical properties. For equipment operating continuously at high temperatures, consult the manufacturer before selecting this grade.
Do not assume that standard XAR 500 has the same temperature capability as specialised heat-resistant steel grades.
Welding
XAR 500 can be welded using suitable industrial welding processes. However, its high hardness and strength require careful control of welding parameters to reduce the risk of hydrogen-induced cracking and undesirable changes in the heat-affected zone.
Important welding considerations include:
- Select welding consumables compatible with the base material and required joint properties.
- Use low-hydrogen welding consumables and appropriate storage procedures.
- Determine preheating requirements based on plate thickness, carbon equivalent, restraint and ambient conditions.
- Control heat input and interpass temperature.
- Use suitable welding sequences to minimise distortion and residual stress.
- Follow the manufacturer’s welding recommendations and an approved Welding Procedure Specification (WPS).
Preheating temperatures should not be assumed from the grade designation alone. They must be established using the applicable manufacturer guidance and welding procedure.
Cutting, Machining and Fabrication
XAR 500 plates can be processed using suitable industrial equipment and controlled fabrication procedures.
Cutting: Plasma, laser and oxy-fuel cutting may be considered depending on plate thickness, equipment capability and manufacturer recommendations. Cutting parameters should be controlled to manage the heat-affected zone.
Machining: Due to its high hardness, machining requires suitable high-performance tools, rigid machine setups and appropriate cutting parameters.
Cold forming: Bending and forming may be possible within specified limits. Minimum bending radius, plate thickness, rolling direction and tooling clearance should be checked against the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Heat treatment: XAR 500 is generally supplied in a quenched or quenched-and-tempered condition. Uncontrolled heating, stress relieving or re-quenching can change its hardness and mechanical properties. Any thermal treatment must follow manufacturer instructions.
